USA Wins Gold, Still Perfect after 19-12 Victory over Canada |

COQUITLAM,
B.C. - Team USA won the Gold Medal for the sixth straight time with a
19-12 victory over Canada today at the 2008 ILF U-19 Men's Lacrosse
World Championships at Coquitlam's Percy Perry Stadium.
The win marks the third straight U-19 championships where the U.S. beat
Canada in the gold medal game. With the loss, Canada will take the
silver medal. The game was not as close as it was the first time
around, in the round robin game, when the game went to overtime in a
16-15 U.S. victory on July 6. In the 20 year history of the tournament,
the U.S. has won every single game they have played. This win marks the
sixth straight gold medal for the U.S. on the way to their 36-0 record.
Team USA opened the scoring early in the game and never looked back.
Once again they played their best at the end and outscored Canada 5-1
in the fourth period.
The U.S. team put forth a team effort and had many contributing players
in the victory. Nicholas Elsmo (University of Virginia), Craig Dowd
(Georgetown University), and Dean Gibbons (Harvard University) all
scored three goals for the Americans and Anthony Mendes (University of
Maryland), Tim Donovan (Johns Hopkins University), and Ramel Bratton
(University of Virginia) scored two goals apiece.
Canada had a big game from Adam Jones (Owen Sound, Ont.), who scored
five goals, but no one else got on stage to share the spotlight of the
big game for Canada. They had a lot of unforced errors and
overcommitted on defense many times throughout the game. Canadian
goalie Remington Steele (Dallas, TX.), who had played strong in
back-to-back complete games, allowed 13 goals on 22 shots. Jason
Crawford (Burlington, Ont.) played during the third period and allowed
six goals on nine shots before they put Steele back in to finish the
game.
Matthew Dolente (Johns Hopkins University) was a force in the faceoff
circle for the Americans, winning 19 of 28 opportunities. Kevin Crowley
(New Westminster, B.C.) was a respectable 10 for 21 in faceoffs for the
Canadians. Adrian Sorichetti (Whitby, Ont.), Robbie Campbell (Delta,
B.C.), and Michael Cudmore (Ashburn, Ont.) went a combined two for 14
at the faceoff circle.
USA got on the board first when Andrew Feinberg (Brown University) beat
Canada goaltender Remington Steele from in close. Canada replied only
20 seconds later when Cudmore beat U.S. goalie Adam Ghitelman
(University of Virgina). The U.S. scored two in row by Elsmo and Dowd
before Canada responded with a goal by Adam Jones. Dowd got his second
of the period at 9:06. Canada responded on the powerplay when Mark
Matthews (Oshawa, Ont.) beat Ghitelman in close to close the gap to
only one goal. The U.S. took advantage of some unforced errors by
Canada to score three unanswered goals to end the period up by a score
of 7-3.
Canada rallied in the second quarter to tie the game at seven by
scoring the first four goals of the period. The first three goals were
scored by Adam Jones and the fourth was scored by Matt Cockerton
(Oshawa, Ont.), his first of the tournament. The U.S. scored three
unanswered goals to end the second period, just as they did to end the
first period.
Canada scored the opening goal of the third period and pulled to within
two goals. That didn't last long. The replied with goals by Ryan Young,
Elsmo and Gibbons to go up 13-8. Canada scored two in a row and looked
like they had momentum, but the U.S. quickly scored and to take the
wind out of the sails of the Canadians. Canada scored one more time
before the end of the third to make the score 14-11 going into the
fourth.
In the fourth period, the U.S. put the game away for good by scoring
four in a row and go up by seven at about the seven minute mark and it
was apparent the U.S. team was going to win their 36th straight game,
and their sixth straight gold.
